There are approximately 9 million dairy cows in the U.S.  Over 90% of these are Holstein.  Let's look at the very elite Holstein cows...

*  +100 lbs. protein and +100 lbs. fat index

*  Over 30,000 lbs. milk as a 2-year-old

*  Very Good or Excellent, Very Good or Excellent Mammary

*    Deep, Most Outstanding Cow Families, Including current" Queen of the Breed "

       nominees such as Zita ,Dellia and Laurie Shiek

*    +1800 CTP Index (150 Cows in the U.S.)

There are very few Holstein cows in the world that meet these requirements.   When you add  5.0% fat test and 4.0% protein test  (remember: cheese and ice cream are the most profitable products in the dairy industry), there are only a handful of cows (click here).  Flatness International, Inc. has  sons from one of them, "Frisco" (exported to Japan for $50,000), BEETHOVEN, and PYRAMID.   Another cow, the EX(94) "Zita",a "Queen of the Breed" Nominee is the granddam of ZADE.   "Zanadu", ZADE's dam became a third cow in this elite group.   All of these bulls are now plus proven.  The dam of our current young sires, BRILLIANCE and KING, is Bethany, the No. 1 Fat Index cow of the breed.

In an article entitled, "Where Will Young Sires Fit in Tomorrow's Herds?" by Dr. Bennett Cassell, published in the July 1998 issue of Hoard's Dairyman, the author reports:  "Our study showed that the bottom 30 percent of bulls for parent average MFP$ graduated only about one young sire in every 15 sampled.   Less than two out of 100 of that bottom 30 percent ever wound up among the top 5 percent of proven bulls.  At the other end of the scale, one in every four or five young sires among the top 30 percent for parent average MFP$ graduated.  The very best proven bulls were far more likely to come from this pedigree group.   Studs could cut sampling costs by being more selective of the pedigrees they choose to sample."  (Reprinted with permission.)
